AAFES Graphics & Environmental Branding Refresh | Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan
Originally opened in 2009, the Kadena Exchange at Kadena Air Base serves as the flagship shopping destination for the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) throughout the Pacific. At more than 340,000 square feet, the facility is the largest Exchange in the Pacific and among the largest military exchanges in the world, providing shopping, dining, and essential services to thousands of active-duty military members, retirees, civilian employees, and their families. The complex includes a two-story retail environment, military clothing sales, national retailers, specialty shops, and a large food court designed to serve the U.S. military community stationed in Okinawa.
In April 2024, Shaw PPC Design partnered with AAFES to modernize the facility’s interior graphics and environmental branding as part of a comprehensive refresh of the original 2009 installation. While the building’s architecture remained largely unchanged, the visual environment was transformed with updated graphics, contemporary branding elements, and new wayfinding designed to create a brighter, more engaging shopping experience for today’s military families.
The Challenge
After more than a decade of continuous operation, many of the original graphics no longer reflected current retail design standards or the evolving AAFES brand.
The renovation required a complete graphics refresh while maintaining normal business operations inside one of the busiest military retail facilities in the Pacific.
Project objectives included:
Shaw PPC Design Solution
Shaw PPC Design engineered, manufactured, and installed a comprehensive environmental graphics package that revitalized the Exchange while preserving the investment in the existing facility.
Working closely with AAFES, our team developed graphics that enhanced department visibility, reinforced brand consistency, and created a more welcoming retail environment throughout the store.
Scope Included
Every element was manufactured using durable commercial-grade materials designed to withstand the demanding environment of one of AAFES’ highest-volume retail locations.
AAFES Exchange – Kadena
The completed renovation transformed the visual identity of the Kadena Exchange, creating a brighter, more contemporary shopping environment while extending the life of one of AAFES’ most significant retail investments. Updated graphics and signage improved customer navigation, strengthened departmental identities, and reinforced the Exchange’s role as the premier retail destination for the military community throughout Okinawa.
By combining thoughtful design, precision manufacturing, and coordinated international installation, Shaw PPC Design delivered a turnkey graphics solution that modernized the customer experience while supporting AAFES’ mission of providing exceptional retail environments for America’s service members and their families.
